As of its latest Form 990, from 2020, it had net assets of nearly $1.4 billion, and Coleman was earning over $2.5 million. In 2020 Consumer Reports alerted readers to the organization’s violation of its own privacy policy: The College Board was caught selling student data to companies including Adobe, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Snapchat, and Yahoo. That testing has also led to other, shadier sources of revenue. And for the College Board, AP is a windfall: Last year more than two million students took, collectively, over four million exams. For families, it’s a chance at college credit that is obviously much cheaper than tuition. In some places, public-school teachers earn bonuses based on students’ passing exam scores. Over the past few decades, that has changed. Some of the teachers and professors who had worked to develop the program worried that the testing was secondary, unnecessary, or even detrimental, but they were largely unfazed by the organization’s authority: After all, they influenced the tests, not the other way around. “High on the list of professional benefits stands the tremendous cooperative attainment of college and secondary-school subject specialists who have been able to reassess, reorganize, and revitalize subject matter,” the principal and superintendent reported, before concluding: “Today’s schoolhouse has a greater measure of academic freedom and power than it has ever known.” The characteristic hubris of those affiliated with the College Board aside, the stated ideal was to enliven high school by making it more like college.įrom the start, the College Board relied on standardized exams as a means of both easing communication about the quality of students’ work and charging a fee for administration. In 1956 the College Board Review celebrated AP’s success at Newton High School, in Massachusetts. When funding for the meetings ran out a few years later, the College Board took over administration of what it would brand the Advanced Placement program. In the early 1950s the Ford Foundation’s Fund for the Advancement of Education sponsored meetings in which teachers and professors at elite institutions collaborated to accelerate development of democratic habits of mind in the students who they assumed would be the nation’s stewards. An open letter, signed by over a thousand faculty members in African American studies, called on the College Board to “assume a leadership role in fighting against widespread efforts by states to censor antiracist thought and expression.” Writing in Slate, Jon Boeckenstedt targeted David Coleman, the organization’s chief executive, personally: “Leadership comes with responsibilities that Coleman has clearly ignored or neglected.”Įven John McWhorter, who agreed with the new course’s substance, was “unconvinced, to say the least,” that the changes had been made for the College Board’s stated reasons.Īdvanced Placement arose in response to specific historical circumstances. They pissed in our face & said it was raining.” In these pages Holden Thorp accused the College Board of caginess. Yale’s David Blight told Vox, “It seems silly to take out the Black Lives Matter movement.” Northwestern’s Keeanga Yamahtta-Taylor tweeted: “Just days ago held a mtg with African American Studies professors swearing that neither Florida or any politics influenced their decision to gut their AP African American Studies course. “This is a train wreck,” said UCLA’s Cheryl Harris. The College Board had maintained for weeks that the changes were not the result of political pressure.Īn outcry swiftly ensued. The College Board had repeated contact with the Florida Department of Education before it overhauled the course by de-emphasizing materials by scholars like Kimberlé Crenshaw and terms like “systemic” and “womanism.” “We wanted this course to be adopted by 50 states, and we wanted as many students and teachers as possible to be able to experience it,” Jason Manoharan, vice president for AP program development, told The Washington Post. The past month’s events have thrown the coronation into disarray. Days before the organization revealed the course’s framework, a College Board letter called it “a historic document that deserves your attention.” “We hope it will broaden the invitation to Advanced Placement and inspire students with a fuller appreciation of the American story,” said Trevor Packer, senior vice president for AP and instruction, back in August. The College Board’s new AP course in African American studies was meant to be a crowning achievement for the organization. Black Forest Cuckoo Clocks have a rich history which dates back to the 1600’s. the quintessential stale-beer writer John le Carré.Įven these groupings are less firm categories than the two poles between which most spy movies fall. Stale-beer stories often tend to be informed by the actual practices of spying, and sometimes written by those with some experience in the world of espionage, e.g. Stale-beer stories take place in the shadows, where dull-looking operatives plot and probe, it’s never clear who’s a friend and who’s an enemy, and moral compasses tend to get warped. If that puts you in mind of James Bond, there’s a reason. Martini stories operate in a glamorous world where bad guys live in lairs, femmes fatales wait at every backgammon table, and our hero drives fast cars and seldom takes off a tuxedo. It’s useful to remember the terms “Martini” and “stale beer,” two categories often used to define spy stories, in movies and elsewhere. If it features espionage of some form as a key element, in other words, it’s a spy movie for our purposes.Ī few dominant types of spy movies do help provide a little definition, however. See, genre definitions are hard!) For this list of the best spy movies ever made, Vulture opted for a big-tent approach in an attempt to create a selection that captured the full breadth of the spy film. (At least Westerns take place in the Old West. Maybe more quickly than most, given that the term can encompass films featuring everything from evil supervillains plotting to take over the world with futuristic weapons to grounded-in-fact stories of those who trade secrets behind enemy lines. Photo: Emily Denniston/Vulture/Getty ImagesĪs with most genres, any attempt to define the spy movie falls apart pretty quickly. Moreover, to maintain the consistent time system, UTC does not observe Daylight Saving Time (unlike GMT). The primary reason why UTC was considered to be a more accurate system was the fact that it used the rotation of Earth and atomic clocks for measurements. In 1963, the concept of UTC was established as the primary international standard which would denote how other countries would regulate their time in relation to UTC 3. Emergence of UTCĬoordinated Universal Time was introduced as the more accurate replacement of GMT. As a result, in 1911, the International Congress on Astronomical Ephemerides agreed to use GMT for the universal offset of the clocks for other nations. The advancement of the technologies of the wireless telegraph indicated that all countries require precise time standard. From that point, every nation used GMT to calculate the time in relation to this standard.Įventually, GMT became the unified standard for the economic interactions between countries around the world. Subsequently, Greenwich meridian was determined as zero degrees longitude, thus, the international standard time 2. Considering that Great Britain was a developed marine nation, it used Greenwich Meridian to position own ships. The history of GMT started with the decision of the International Meridian Conference in 1884 to establish the prime meridian which would denote the international standard of time. Nevertheless, same as for GMT, the primary purpose of UTC is to denote the universal time zone in relation to others. To calculate the UTC time, the atomic clocks with frequency cycles are used to display the accurate measurements of time. UTC differs from GMT due to 24-hour system, which starts counting from midnight. Also, considering that each day requires the same interval, the pendulum clocks at the observatory was the perfect mechanism to standardise time for the universal coordination.Ĭoordinated Universal Time (UTC) came to replace GMT with the more accurate and scientific measurements of time 1.Īlthough the abbreviation does not match the term, it was used as a compromise for the translation from European languages. The term “mean” indicates the average time the clocks need to pass through the solar day. The name derives from the place where the solar time was standardised for everyone: it was established at The Royal Observatory Greenwich. The abbreviation of GMT stands for Greenwich Mean Time. Nevertheless, both of these time standards are widely used in the world for a similar purpose of time coordination. Although UTC and GMT indicate the same time, UTC is based on the more precise mechanism of time measurement. In particular, the concept of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) was designed to provide a more accurate timekeeping system. The advancement of telecommunication technologies influenced the creation of an even more precise system of time identification. The primary difference remains to be the fact that GMT is the denomination of a timezone, while UTC is the title of the time standard. Therefore, the difference in time for other countries is indicated either by adding or subtracting hours from GMT time. The implementation of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) was the first step to determine the time zone of other countries in regard to GMT+0. Especially, it was vital to have a standardised time zone for communication and military coordinations. » Click here for UTC to Local Time Conversion. With the globalisation and evolution of international relationships, the need for universal time identification has occurred. » Click here for IST to Local Time Conversion.
